Hi, I’m Martin Smith, and welcome to my website. The earnest young chappy above is me. The photo was taken at a pivotal moment in my life: the last day I took anything seriously. I am an Australian ~~writer~~ hobbyist—a humourist of sorts—of short fiction. Having spent a working life crunching numbers, I retired in 2013 to the Bellarine Peninsula, where I live and write and wage the eternal war against commas. When I’m not banging away on my keyboard with thumbs, index fingers or forehead, or reading snippets of my scribblings to my beloved Rose, you’ll more likely than not find me walking the beach barefoot at low tide or downing a double scoop of Rocky Road at the local ice-creamery.

Since January 2020, I have published a story of humour—a comedy—on this site on the first day of every month. (Some of the longer stories have been spread over two or more months.) For those of you who prefer to flick through the printed page rather than scroll down a screen, I am publishing six collections of comedies (and two volumes of collected comedies) in late August, 2026.
